The University of ShenZhen
This invited competition was undertaken in association with Chinese practice Thinker Design. The University of ShenZhen required a solution for multi-discipline Science and Media laboratories and student facilities totalling 42,000m2 over 14-storeys.
The proposal introduced a pair of towers forming an edge to the campus and creating an important formal entrance enhancing the important BaiShe Road – XueFu Road location. The two towers were connected by ‘The Spine’ linking the lower level teaching laboratories in the towers with an end building housing the Media Centre.
Inspired by its science laboratory function, a stylised pattern representing cellular growth was developed and overtly overlaid onto the built form, making a conscious connection between the buildings’ functions and the rapid development of the new University of ShenZhen Southern Campus.
