The new RFDS Aeromedical facility integrates administration and operational functions, into a new facility located at Adelaide Airport to serve the RFDS Central Operations. The facility incorporates an aircraft hangar and workshop for both maintenance and operational aircraft, a patient transfer facility (PTF), ambulance bay, crew sleeping quarters and an office component for RFDS administration.
The key planning principle has ‘Patient Care’ as it’s primary focus. The design provides a strong visual and physical connectivity between the operational and administration components. Views are provided into the hangar and onto the apron from the open plan work environment and PTF. The entry into the building is centrally located and is designed as an atrium / reception space, providing views into the hangar, towards the runway, ambulance bay and upstairs administration. A raised skylight is a feature of the atrium providing a visual and ‘symbolic’ link to the sky.
This design integrates and reflects the services provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and their core function of Patient Care.
